12 Artists: Monique Kleinhans

Hello all! My name is Monique Kleinhans and I'm the 12th Elf in our 12 Artists of Christmas this year.
My work at the gallery is made mostly of fibers and fabric. I combine traditional quilting with art techniques to create both pictorial and abstract pieces that can hang on your wall, dress your table or even wrap you up in a warm hug while your read in your favorite chair or are nestled all snug in your bed. Always looking for ways to use each and every ounce of fabric and accoutrements, I also make quilted greeting cards and Christmas ornaments that are miniature thread paintings placed on old wooden spools.
My love for working in the medium as well as experimenting within the craft, came directly from one of the most wonderful people on this planet....My Mother! She is still one of my favorite people to experiment new ideas or techniques with and an inspiration to always keep learning and dreaming.
You'll find me at the gallery tomorrow morning, or if you're not able to swing by, you can always visit me at my website: www.ladybugscabin.com
I hope you have a very Merry Christmas, wonderful holidays, and a New Year full of art!

Need a new calendar to keep track of the days to come? Grab one of John Ashley's Glacier Park After Dark calendars that are not only full of his beautiful (and award winning) night time photography but also includes interesting scientific facts, details on events through the year that you might want to take a peak at!  (Did you know there is going to be a solar eclipse in August this year?!)

If you're looking to keep yourself warm in style, pour some cocoa or your favorite hot drink into one of Cheryl's or Joanna's beautiful mugs!

Or if wrap yourself up in a beautiful hand made quilt from Monique.  Who says that art can't also be functional!

While you're visiting be sure to check out our newest Guest Artist: Ron Kelly

Ron developed this decorative and pictorial mosaic style by laying precious and exotic materials into or onto a ground-work of solid wood. the intarsia wood decoration method dates back to the fifteenth century Germany and Italy, where the ancient art of intarsia was first used to create beautiful works of art from wood, inspiring both marquetry and inlay. Ron combines these past methods of art design with wood color and grain to produce the desired effect, adding a three dimensional element to each of his wildlife creations. Each art piece is an original design using color, grain of wood and style to create a unique wood masterpiece.

Monique Kleinhas is featured artist for the month of October!

Monique Kleinhans' “Back Roads” exhibit opens First Friday, Oct 4th Artist’s reception, open to the public on First Friday, October 4th 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM

Monique's work includes traditional quilts and textile art – realistic and abstract works created with layers of thread and hand-painted fabrics.

Born and raised in the Flathead, Monique spent much of her childhood riding her bike on our valley’s many back roads. Her love of exploration and ability to see beauty everywhere are evident in her latest collection.

“I love the adventure traveling down even a familiar road brings. Every day is full of potential to see something new, or to see something familiar in a new way. Some of my favorite subjects are old barns and abandoned buildings; I want to explore and hear their stories. Montana's history is visible not only in its landscape and geology, but in the old homesteads still standing under the wide open skies.  While the wood and structure of these old buildings decay, the spirit and desire to live off of the land will never die in the hearts of those who see them."

Monique's wall quilts are unique. She uses layers of thread as paint, creating realistic portraits of our gorgeous local landscapes and historic sites. Her three-dimensional art invites viewers to wander into the pieces – either to imagine the possibilities ahead, or to preserve memories of a visit.
And her signature quilted greeting cards are a fun, unique way to send greetings to those you care about.

"Back Roads" will be on display through the month of October.

An artist reception is scheduled for First Friday, October 4th, 2013 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Paint, Metal, and Mud Gallery at 16 First Street, Kalispell. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

And the answer is....

Did you guess who the latest round of trivia was about?  It is our textile artist:  Monique Kleinhans

When she is not diving in her piles of fabric to create beautiful quilts, unique wall art or her quilted greeting cards, Monique can be found teaching and helping others create with fabric at Glacier Quilts, supporting her plant habit, at Swan River Gardens as well as leading theater workshops in the Valley and performing and directing with Seattle based touring company 'theater simple'.

(It's a good thing 'sleep' isn't on her top ten list!)

Much of Monique's work involves thread...and a lot of it.   She uses traditional quilting techniques along-side exploring different textures and dimensional elements, creating unique quilted art that has great depth and layers.

She works mainly off of photos that she takes while out enjoying the beautiful areas of Montana, although some of her pieces journey into a more whimsical world as well.

Check out her website to see more of what she is currently working on in her studio
or to commission a unique creation tailor made for you.
