Hi. I'm Philip Granrud, a local photographer here in the Flathead Valley, and I'm the first artist to start PM&M's 12 Artists of Christmas for this years holidays. Everyday we will be featuring one of our talented artists from the gallery and there just happens to be 12 of us, so it works out perfectly. 

So a couple fun facts about me: I've lived here my entire life except for college in Bozeman. I love Montana and I've always enjoyed the outdoors. But in 2008 I developed an even greater appreciation for nature and exploring, and I wanted to capture all the neat things I was seeing on my adventures, so I started doing photography for fun. I'm probably best known for my night sky photography. I almost immediately got into night photography because I've always been a bit of a night owl, my knowledge of photography grew quickly, and before I knew it, many Universities across the Western United States were using some of my photos as examples for two things: Art/Photography Professors were using my night photos to teach their students about long exposures and night photography. And Science Professors and Astronomers were using my photos to teach their students about the night sky and science. It all happened so fast and that's when I realized I should be doing photography professionally. I've been lucky enough to do a few firsts and I'm also known for some my photojournalism. Currently I do just about every type of photography. Portraits, Weddings, Night Photography, Wildlife, Landscapes, Real Estate, Photojournalism, Abstract, Events, etc. I'm currently trying to restructure my business(s) because I've grown so much, so I'm spending all my time trying to catch up with that. I do have a big project relating to Glacier National Park starting this month that will continue indefinitely so that's exciting. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me.

Ron developed this decorative and pictorial mosaic style by laying precious and exotic materials into or onto a ground-work of solid wood. the intarsia wood decoration method dates back to the fifteenth century Germany and Italy, where the ancient art of intarsia was first used to create beautiful works of art from wood, inspiring both marquetry and inlay. Ron combines these past methods of art design with wood color and grain to produce the desired effect, adding a three dimensional element to each of his wildlife creations. Each art piece is an original design using color, grain of wood and style to create a unique wood masterpiece.

Montana Moon

Lunar eclipse from April 15, 2014

Paint Metal & Mud photographer, John Ashley, pulled an all-nighter to capture the lunar eclipse that occurred earlier today. This composite photograph shows the eclipse progression from left to right. The series of light images are exposed for the moon in Earth's shadow, and the series of darker images are exposed for the sunny part of the moon. Where they meet in the middle, the totally eclipsed moon is a lovely shade of orange.

NEW WORK - John Ashley

Stop by the Paint Metal & Mud gallery to see John's newest photograph, "Dream Catcher." In this macro photograph, the early morning dew drops on a delicate spider web refract the image of a nearby sunflower. You can check this one out in person at the gallery, or come see John and Tracy's booth at the Hockaday Museum's "Arts in the Park" this weekend, at Depot Park in downtown Kalispell. Show hours are 9-6 Friday and Saturday, 10-5 on Sunday.

We Have a Winner!

Stephany Westhusin of Louisville, Colorado, is the winner in our "name the photograph" contest. Her suggested title, "Heaven on Earth," was chosen from almost 200 entries originating from at least five different states. Stephany wins a 28" x 9" limited-edition canvas print of the image that finally has a permanent name.

Name That Photograph!

John made the image from a mountain top at dawn last Sunday, after climbing up the prior evening. This view shows the Livingston Mountain Range and North Fork Valley, on the west side of Glacier National Park. At 7pm, John will announce the winner during his Artist's Reception (between 5-8pm) on July 5, 2013, at the Paint Metal & Mud Art Gallery during the First Friday Art Walk in downtown Kalispell.
